Automated Single Lane Control

There are many instances where the free flow of two-direction traffic may be restricted. In order to safely regulate the flow of traffic over a single lane roadway, a system of control is needed. This system addresses this need with a fully automated solution that covers a wide variety of unique situations. It can be used for replacing flaggers/pilot cars in temporary lane closures for road maintenance, construction, or utility work — or for more permanent installations in private driveways, parking garages, tunnels, blind corners, and more.

Single Lane, Two-Way Access Traffic Cycle

The single lane control cycle has 4 phases to regulate the flow of traffic in both directions over a single lane roadway:

• Phase 1 (Ø1): Direction A is allowed to proceed while B traffic waits.
• Phase 2 (Ø2): Both directions are required to wait while traffic transits the work zone.
• Phase 3 (Ø3): Direction B gets the green light while A waits for clearance time to pass.
• Phase 4 (Ø4): Both directions wait while traffic clears and the cycle repeats.

This is the simplest version of a timed control cycle where each direction receives an equal green light and transit (zone clearance) red light time.

MSLC Single Lane Controller

The MSLC control includes 8 selectable operation modes to fit a range of applications from temporary to semi-permanent installations. The more advanced modes support the use of vehicle sensors to streamline the flow of traffic and minimize wait times.

MSLC Operation Modes:

• Mode 0 — Fully Automatic: Timed cycle with no sensors necessary. Each direction has equal priority with the same green and red (clearance) time, operating on a simple 4-state timed repeat loop.
• Mode 1 — Default A Direction: Cycle pauses in Phase 3 with Signal A green until traffic is detected approaching the B sensor. Only one vehicle approach sensor (B) is necessary.
• Mode 2 — Default B Direction: Cycle pauses in Phase 1 with Signal B green until traffic is detected approaching the A sensor. Only one vehicle approach sensor (A) is necessary.
• Mode 3 — Default Last Cycle: Cycle pauses in Phase 1 or 3, whichever was last active, until traffic is detected approaching the opposite sensor. Two vehicle approach sensors are used.
• Mode 4 — Default Red: Cycle pauses on All Red after completing the clearance time interval. Two vehicle approach sensors are used. As soon as a vehicle is detected, it immediately receives a green light, remaining green until no more vehicles are detected.
• Mode 5 — Manual Red Cycle (Start/Stop): Start button triggers flashing red on both signals until the Stop button at the opposite end is pressed. Both signals turn off immediately when Stop is pressed.
• Mode 6 — Manual Red Cycle (One Button): A sensor or push button at each end triggers flashing red on both signals. Pressing either button again ends flashing red immediately and both signals turn off.
• Mode 7 — Automatic Timed Cycle with Traffic Hold: Holds one direction red / other green while an input (sensor or manual switch) is active.

Single Lane Control Options

Because the MSLC system is modular in its construction, it can be tailored to fit a variety of specialized uses. Here are some of the key parameters that need to be identified so the MSLC control system can be configured for your application. Other parameters such as cycle timing and operation mode can be easily configured by changing switch settings in the field.

Application-Specific Questions:

• Is power available at the site?
• Is it possible to hardwire signals together to a cabinet? (Direct wiring is the most reliable method to ensure synchronization. If not possible, long-range wireless may be required.)
• Are vehicle sensors required? Options include: simple timed system (minimum cost), manual controlled/triggered switch, microwave (radar-type) vehicle detectors, or inductive vehicle loop detectors.
• Is directional priority always equal?
• What is the required green time per cycle? (Based on vehicles and how many are expected per cycle.)
• What is the required red (clearance) time per cycle? (Total red time is the time required to travel the distance of the controlled zone.)
